ree

Iconography Workshop

An all-inclusive iconography

workshop for both beginners and

intermediate students, consisting of

five days of intensive instruction and

studio time under the careful

supervision of the workshop

instructors.

Workshop participants will attain the

understanding and technique to

complete a small Icon over the

course of five days. The daily one-

hour instruction period will cover the

theological significance, theory, and

history of traditional iconography.

The remainder of the workshop

focus will be placed on technique

development, studio instruction, and

execution.

Beginner and

Intermediate Levels

Students will learn to paint, gild, and

complete one Icon panel according to

the traditional Byzantine technique,

carefully guided by the workshop

instructors (see biographies).

Prototypes for both beginner and

intermediate students will be

provided.

The curriculum includes a one-hour

daily introductory lecture covering

the theological history and

significance of traditional Byzantine

iconography, along with color theory,

Byzantine drawing, and paint

application techniques. Workshop

instruction will cover line drawing;

color mixing and layering;

development of flesh tones, hair, and

garments; constructing the halo;

gilding; and varnishing the Icon

panel.

The class is taught using acrylic

paints.* All students will paint an

Icon but at varied levels of ability.

Beginners should have some artistic

training but are not required to have

experience in iconography.

Intermediate students should have

some level of proficiency in the

Byzantine iconographic tradition.

Intermediate students will

strengthen their foundational

knowledge through personalized

instruction and will be encouraged to

paint at a more challenging level.

Each student, whether beginner or

intermediate, will receive a prepared

Icon panel, paint brushes, paint,

palette, and use of an easel and

bridge.

*Intermediate students are permitted to

paint in egg tempera with prior

approval by the instructors because of

the extra preparation required for egg

tempera Icon panels, which must be

prepared BEFORE the start of the

workshop.

Saint Photios Orthodox

Theological Seminary

Located in a quiet, rural

environment conducive to spiritual

growth and theological study, the

Seminary offers iconography

students a unique opportunity to

learn and to work within the

framework of the Eastern Orthodox

spiritual, ascetical, liturgical, and

mystical tradition. Although not

required, participation in this

Tradition and its prayers and Divine

Services will enable iconography

students to experience firsthand the spiritual depth of

the Orthodox Church and its impact on the

lives and work of iconographers,

which, in turn, is intrinsically connected to Holy

Tradition.
